:: High Ground in the Muskeg!

Sure glad we reside on high ground. (All is relative, of course, I mean we are living in the muskeg {the northern version of the southern swamp land only with lots of peat, stumpy tree, birch shrub, black bears and moose} and muskeg is internationally famous {okay, locally} for containing no high ground, nada). But this week I was and continue to be extremely thankful for land which is higher than the creek at the other end of our property.
an afternoon of hard rain
My sweetie set up the eaves trough to flow down to the pond. While most of the rain was sheeting past the eaves trough, what did flow down my little creek was filling the pond past the point of full. My imagination supplies this image: all the goldfish and koi with bodies squeezed into rock crevices, fins wedged amongst the plants, mouths suctioned tightly to the pond liner.... I see the wisdom of lots of plants and rock overhang. My photo didn't capture the large raindrops hitting the water and bouncing straight back into the air, or the rush of water out the over-flow creek!
If you peer at the portion of the fence beside the garden gate you can see our rain gauge with 7.5cm (3 inches) of rain water collected the past couple of days. Wet, wet, wet... and we have long haired miniature dachshunds, four of the little rats... mud, mud, mud. Long haired dachshunds, be they only miniature, pack a whole lot of mud into the house. So the sound you hear is this poor, poor, poor thing banging her head against the wall. I am so thankful the dogs fit into the utility sink in the shop. It has a sprayer and high sides. Best of all I no longer have to de-mud the bathtub several times a day!
Wishing rain if you need it, sun if you don't,
Zuzia,
